CREDITS & CREDENTIALS
My Working Life, Prior to 1953
June-Sept. 1946 Newport Casino Theatre, Newport, Rhode Island. Apprentice. I join Actors’ Equity, and appear in eight plays including They All Come ToRick’s (Casablanca), What A Life and Young Woodley.
1948-1950 The Dybbuk, Mooney’s Kid Don’t Cry, Phaedra, This Property Is Condemned at Equity Library Theatre and at ANTA off/off Broadway.
1950-1952 Darkness At Noon on Broadway and on Tour for two seasons, supporting first Claude Rains, then Edward G. Robinson. (I played Joseph Kieffer - Prisoner 302)
1950-1951 Featured performer weekly for two seasons on Leave It To Papa on WPIX Television. (Gigi Lombardi)
1947-1953 Featured on live television programs All In The Family, Danger, Kraft Television Playhouse, Lights Out. Appeared as featured actors for eighty weeks on Pantomime Quiz on WABD television, 1948-49.
1947-1950 Featured as Bruce Bigby on The Brighter Day on NBC radio. Replaced Jack Lemmon and remained in the role until poor Bruce died, On the air of a mysterious cough. When that cough appeared in an early script, I thought: Oh, Oh! Bruce is on his way out. And six weeks later, he expired. I co-starred in and co-authored Sibling with Dolores Sutton on the Radio City Playhouse, again on NBC radio. I appeared weekly in supporting and background roles on You Are There each Sunday on CBS radio.
1952 - 1953 In the summer of 1952, at the conclusion of the Darkness At Noon national tour, I started my search for a job as close to the stage as I could come without having to learn lines. It took me nine months to land that job, in an agency representing actors, playwrights, directors and other artists working in theatre.
My Agency Years
1953 - 1974 I thought I’d test the waters on the other side of the footlights. I tested - for twenty one years! Then, at the peak of my agency career, tired of my blue suit and tie, I exchanged them for the less formal togs of playwright, librettist and actor once again. I haven’t worn a suit since, except in character in a play or movie.
